Philosophy & Stories from Telethens

"The world progresses from a lesser to a greater state — and it is the responsibility of everyone in the world to work to create a perfect world. People are not evil, only ignorant. Their ignorance must be corrected."

The Kallisian Colleges

Each college here at the Academy are known both for what they teach and the types of personalities that they cultivate. To which college would you belong?

College of Political Philosophy

Himedere Lawyers

The smallest of the Kallipolisian Colleges, those who study here are concerned with laws, ethics, the optimization of human systems, and being TECHNICALLY correct. They are known for being difficult and prissy, having obnoxious laughs, and all of them seem to know ex-assassins and ex-criminals.

Why do any dirty work if someone else will do it for you? If this is you, you'd fit right in at the College of Political Philosophy.

College of Natural Philosophy

Tsundere Engineers & Scientists

The Natural Philosophers study the natural world and how one might exploit it. They are the engineers, the scientists, and inventors of the Aftokratoria. Despite their book brilliance, they tend to be bad with their emotions and relationships - but stick around them long enough and they might come to love you to the point of invention.

You might be a Natural Philosopher if the world seems more interesting than the people in it.

College of Aesthetics

Yandere Liberal Artists

The Aestheticians study and create the arts - both visual, written, and performed. Those who study at the College of Aesthetics find it much easier to find actual commission work rather than living on the government's universal minimum wage. They are known for being exceedingly passionate people - but their passionate highs are met with equally low lows. They are known for being possessive perfectionists but are fundamentally honest people.

You might fit in with the Aestheticians if you're wanting to learn to express yourself and if you're willing to do what it takes to get what you want.

College of Epistemology

Kuudere Pseudo-witches

Those who come here typically want to know about magic, healing, and emotional well-being but don't want to make the risky investment of removing one of their eyes. (If you did, you'd join the church or apprentice under an actual witch). They are often calm, competent people, focused on business, but warm up once you get to know them.

If you want to learn all the secrets and ethics of magic without actually being able to do magic, this is the College for you.

College of Logic

Deredere Logicians

The largest of the colleges - a place for those who want a formal education but have no idea what they're going to do with their life. Come here and you'll find out!

You'll study how to organize one's mind, how to critically analyze things through both inductive and deductive reasoning, and how to recognize and apply patterns to day-to-day life. The Logicians may seem flighty and ditzy, but there's actually quite a lot going on their pretty, little heads. Logicians often end up running businesses, logistics for the government, or making agricultural advancements.

The Rise of the Philosopher King

"Sing, O heavenly Dyeus, of Those Who Came BeforeGrant me wisdom, courage, justice, and temperanceSo that I may tell of theirs and their resultant creationWhich, while never rivaling yours, built the foundationUpon which we raise our temple, the Aftokratoria" -- Clatopes

Many many years ago, there were Four Philosophers. One was a craftsman, one was a fighter, one was a politician, and one was a magus. They were each the "greatest who had ever lived" up until that point.

At that time, the Isle of Telethens was ruled by a council of great men and women from various city-states. Then, the Isle came under attack by barbarians - a horde larger than any Telethenian army had ever seen. The council argued but could not decide on the best way to defeat the barbarians. So, they separated and each tried their own way.

There were many different ways to try to defeat the barbarians, and each city-state tried a different one. The northerners huddled in their forts and homes that were strongly enforced by the Craftsman. The easterners offered trades to the barbarians to leave under the Politician. The westerners created clever traps and wards under the Magus. And the southerners raised an army under the Fighter. But all the city-states separately could do nothing to stop the barbarians.

Then, the Four Philosophers reconvened and realized what they needed was someone to break the tie between them - someone who could calculate the best course of action for the WHOLE country to make. And they made the First Automaton - the Philosopher King. The Philosopher King was crafted to be beautiful by the Craftsman, taught the art of war and combat by the Fighter, taught the just ways of ruling, managing the economy, and how to listen to one's people by the Politician. Lastly, the Philosopher King was given life by the Magus.

The Philosopher King used his newfound power to raise an army with the help of the Magi and defeat the barbarians. But then, he offered them fair and just terms of surrender. None of the Four Philosophers personally got their way. And yet, they humbly submitted themselves to the Philosopher King, only offering advice but not seeking recognition nor power for themselves. Instead, they only sought power for the good of the people. And so, the Philosopher King conquered the barbarians and won them over. And since then, they have lived peacefully as part of our Aftokratoria.

The Fall of the Philosopher King

(Arlasaire, watching Ymver reintroduce the Emperor of Thuille to the world...)

Riavh let out a bark of laughter, almost bitterly, and shook his head.

  • Ri: But Thuille is no more...

  • Ym: Old Thuille fell. But the citystate remains. And Nouveau Thuille just surrendered to the Aftokratoria in the south.

  • Ri: *Sitting up* The Aftokratoria.

  • Ym: In your time, was the Aftokratoria ruled by their Philosopher King?

  • Ri: *Bitterly* Yes. It- Or rather, HE was a tyrant in my time. I was never able to defeat an army led by the Philosopher King. They took him apart though, after he...

  • Ym: ...went on a murderous rampage? Er, lyslis depiahg?

I could hear the storyteller's smile creep into the cadence of Ymver's gentle voice. It was soothing...

  • Ym: He fell in love. But most women want a man of flesh-and-blood, not an automaton. In all the things they taught him, unfortunately, they forgot to teach him how to handle rejection... They took him apart after that. It wasn't until recently that they needed him again. Yet now... now he has the power to level entire cities with a single gesture. The allied north cannot hope to compete with that.

I felt a chill settle in as Ymver said that.

It was Yuletide, and the Aftokratoria's march across the North had ceased for now. But with HIM, they could force us to capitulate anything. Anything was better than suffering that thing's wrath...
