Svanihk Governance

The Svanihk Tsars have, some with more violence and some with less, bowed to the Isle of Telethens -- but the egalitarian Democracy means the popular ones have basically maintained the status quo...

Modern

Svanihk people will democratically elect their City Senates to run their cities. They also elect one or two Senators to represent them in the National Senate. National Senators travel to Telethens to represent the region’s interests.

Crime and Punishment

In the Aftokratoria, historically laws differed widely between regions--but there was a lot of banishment. Today, there are universal laws that govern everywhere. If you commit a dangerous crime you get arrested, temporarily held somewhere you can't leave, and then you're tried in front of a group of your peers. You get a lawyer assigned to you by the state or you get your lawyer friend to defend you, a different lawyer prosecutes you, they argue, a judge bangs a gavel any time the lawyers say something stupid. And then, the jury votes at the end.

Over the years, punishments have been standardized. A lot of punishments are fines or reduction of wages (since they're all monitored by the state), some are being forcibly moved and re-educated (this is not a euphemism for torture), and in the most extreme cases, your life is forfeit. You're not necessarily killed (but you could be)--instead, you are stripped of your sash and therefore your right to vote and to receive state wages and state protections--like human rights and such. Then, your victim gets to do whatever they want to you--including kill you.

If you're under the age of 16 and commit crimes, you'll probably be handed over to the Inquisitors to monitor and discipline. This is because, technically, parents aren't solely responsible for raising children--the WHOLE COMMUNITY is. So, if they're causing trouble, it is considered a failure of the whole community legally--However, in some Svanihk communities, this isn't the cultural mindset yet.
