Svanihk Spirituality

Dyeusism is the belief in one, all-powerful, all-good, all-knowing God that interconnects us all.

Guiding Beliefs

All things move from Eris to Dyeus — from Chaos to Order. The whole world is meant to be interconnected through peace, community, and knowledge. Knowledge and truth are only ever good things.

  • Above all else, thou shalt do good, and what is good is good for the most people. Failing this, thou shalt not cause harm, to others or to oneself, as this harms all Dyeus.

  • Thou shalt seek to see as much as possible, as greater sight shall lead to the good of more people. Blindness to oneself or others is Eris.

  • Thou shalt respect those who see more than them and those who have seen more than them. Their wisdom is to be treasured, as their insight is Dyeus.

  • When it comes your turn, thou shalt give the wisdom that shall bring the most good. When others are blind, thou shalt give them sight. Eris to Dyeus.

  • All fates are interconnected, the fates of suffering and the fates of blithe. Dyeus weaves our fates together and no fate is lesser than any other.

Pantheon

Dyeus--The heavens, light, illumination, hope, knowledge, sight, and time. These are the domain of Dyeus. Dyeus is not a man nor a woman nor parent nor child. For Dyeus is the spirit of the world. The will of the universe. The flow of time is Dyeus, as it guides the river inextricably toward the sea. Where the Sea meets the Sky is Dyeus. Where the Ysse-snow falls in Winter is Dyeus. The weaving thread is Dyeus, as it ties the work of the weaver to the colors of the dyer to the wool of the sheep. The connection between people is Dyeus, as one heart is linked to another and to another. There are none beyond the realm of Dyeus. Theirs is the will of the world, the prayer of every man and woman and parent and child.

Eris--The nothingness, the void, the loneliness, and the despair. This is the domain of Eris. But Eris is not evil, but rather the contrast to Dyeus--the rival who works to challenge Dyeus to be better. A force to be overcome, yet not one to be hated nor feared.

Svana--The earth and the material. Dyeus is here with us. This is our world, the marriage between Dyeus and Eris.

Common Symbols

  • Inscribed Circles--In addition to teaching how magic Ysse works for the masses, inscribed circles are seen to represent how Dyeus is everywhere throughout the world within Telethens. Different inscriptions mean different things--though typically represent the unity and balance of elements.

  • Winged Eyes--Often seen a representation of the Seeress, this image is the most iconic of the faith of Dyeus outside of Telethens. Many birds are revered as well, with their fallen feathers being woven into cloaks for religious ceremonies and eye-masks with feathers are seen everywhere for holidays.

  • Solbird--A symbol of the Seeress, as this bird flies between the earth and Chrysigia and are said to carries the prayers of humans them. No one is to touch these creatures or their feathers except Illuminators, or else they'll be literally killed.

  • Ossifrage--A symbol of Power and futuresight, this bird is said to be able to predict the future in Telethenian culture and so it was merged into modern Dyeusism as a symbol of the Seeress.

  • Daisies--Purity, innoncence, symbol of the Seeress

Origin of the World

Listen, child, for in the very beginning, there was only a chaotic void - Eris, an eternal storm which raged on and on throughout the world. But in that eternal storm, there was a perfect storm - from which Dyeus arose. Admist the senseless darkness, Dyeus shone glorious and bright. Dyeus warred against Eris. Eris hurled continents and stars but Dyeus withstood them with their infinite wisdom. And so, Eris tired and Dyeus defeated the storm and ascended into the Heavens as the one true God.

But Dyeus is not a destroyer, and so, despite Eris' treachery, Dyeus married them and from their love was born Svana - our world. Dyeus made the flowers, plant, and the birds to live on the continents. And Eris made the raging sea and the weather to destroy these things. There was a great war then, between the creatures of the land and the water, until Dyeus placed themselves between them. And so the wind and water bring us life, for they are connected through Dyeus. And Eris retreated beneath the waves to the Abyss - a land of eternal ice and darkness. But the two are not far - for you can see where Dyeus and Eris kiss, where the sea meets the sky.

With the world now more interconnected, Dyeus made the first man and woman and the first parent and child, molding them of clay with their many hands. But they were not connected, much like Eris was alone. So the first man and the first woman warred without remorse and the first parent hurt the first child for no reason. Dyeus saw this and saw that this was not good. Dyeus placed themselves between the newly-made humans then so they would not hurt each other and connected their hearts. The humans then began to live in peace and began to discover the many wonders of Svana - sowing and building and eating many wonderful things and tying things together. Eris to Dyeus, child. This is how all things proceed in Svana.

Eris was jealous of Dyeus' care for the humans, and tugged at Dyeus wherever their hearts touch. This is loneliness, child, and despair. And fearing the humans of Dyeus, Eris made the Tiarnoglofi - the Demons - to untie the knots of humans. And the Dragons which guard Dyeus' realm to keep the humans from getting in. And then, Eris made Ysse-Springs, chasms into the Abyss. But Dyeus saw that this was good, for the bonds that did not break grew all the stronger for Eris' pulling.

And so, with each passing year, we go from Eriss to Dyeus. This is the proceeding of all things in Svana.

Yeulia, the Seeress of the World & Daughter of God

Many moons ago, there lived a Tsar and Tsarinav who had no child. They prayed to the Dyeus of the Moon and Sun to bless them with fertility. On the Winter Solstice when all the constellations aligned and a blue moon hung high in the sky, they found a child floating on the foaming waves with silver eyes and hair blue as the night. They named her "Yeulia" and cared for her as their own.

As a child, she was obedient and yet rarely said a word. Despite this, one day, Yeulia spoke and demanded that the Tsar and Tsarinav plant an extra ten fields of wheat and barley before a fortnight. Her parents were shocked and said they could not do so, so Yeulia went out herself that night and summoned invisible beasties and they plowed and planted ten fields of wheat and barley. That summer, there was a collapse of stone from the Upper Continent that crushed exactly ten fields. However, thanks to Yeulia's foresight, they were able to survive the winter all the same.

Yeulia grew to be lovely and straight and a devout follower of Dyeus. Everywhere she went, she enacted his will and protected people with her foresight. Yet she was very mysterious and rarely said a word. Despite this, one day, the people grew discontented with the rule of their masters. So, Yeulia went before them and listened to each man, woman, and child. Some wanted justice against their neighbors. Some wanted more food and some wanted prettier spouses. She would sit and listen, without condemnation, and then, in the night, invisible beasties came and solved each of their problems - sometimes in unexpected ways.

On the Yeultide that Yeulia turned 16, Draconic-beasts raided the towns and cities and burnt fields to ash and melted glass out of windows. The Tsar and Tsarinav and all their fair people were terrified and could do nothing against them. During this time, the Dragons were still but mindless beasts. Yeulia went before them, offering them a taste of intelligence, and spoke to them. And she said they could learn to live in peace with the earth and sea, as the humans did and as was Dyeus' will, or they could give up their physical forms to be spirits of fire and air. Those who chose to live in harmony with the land became the Razi Zirnitra - the first Wizards. The rest became the Dragons we know today - who fly on the Lighter Wind and who only attack if they are disrespected or to warn of greater danger. However, some Draconic beasts refused to make a choice, revealing their true nature as Tiarnoglofi - Demons - and killed Yeulia.

Dyeus pitied the lovely girl who had served Them faithfully. So, They kissed her and returned to her to life. And ever since that time, there has always been a girl named Yeulia, born on the Winter Solstice, with the power to see the future. And to this day, Yeulia walks amongst us, advising us and solving our problems.

The Epic of Yeulia

'Twas many many moons ago

There lived a tsar and his wife

They had no child, not tender nor wild

No, naught to further their life

Prayed they to God of the moon

And to Them confessed all their sins

"Please, God above, nothin' more would I love,

Than your blessing to win."

God above, They heard the tsar

And soon, a young lass was born

From the sea foam and ocean and loam

And with the stars, adorned

They named their daughter "Yeulia"

For in her eyes were the stars

The child was bright but silent as night

And beloved by the tsars

One autumn day, Yeulia foresaw

The fate of her people to die

Chrysig would fall, crushing them all

O Island in the Sky

Yeulia begged, "O God above,

I do not want this boon

Find someone new to do this for you

And you must find them soon"

Sing Yeulia, O Yeulia

The Daughter of Heaven and Night

What will you do? What path will you choose?

Please grant us your foresight

Our God held her and held her close,

And said, "You have my eyes.

Please do not fear, O child so dear,

This is your time to rise."

Yeulia returned back home

Her people to shelter

Guiding them all away from rockfall

Leaving behind welter

Then Chrysig, indeed, did fall

The island once in the sky

Just as she foresaw, not one single flaw

In her power to scry

From then on, she led them on

And advised them on how to be

What best to do and what life to choose

All with her Sight to see

When she came of age, she grew

So lovely and so fair

Eyes like the sea, thin as willow trees

She'd make you stop and stare

Even so, quiet 'gain she grows

But this time, what's on her mind?

Demons and fire and ashes and mire

Where towns once stood so fine

Sing Yeulia, O Yeulia

The Daughter of Heaven and Night

What will you do? What path will you choose?

Please lead our wrongs to right

Folks came and begged and asked of her,

"Why did you let our towns die?"

"Nothing you did, nothing that I bid,

Those deaths, would have denied."

Then farmers and tsars and phil'sophers

And carpenters and seamen

They begged her then to think again

"Please save from Demons"

So, she set out upon the waves

To find the Demon King

Fed him her skin to let knowledge in

From beast to sapience swing

Yeulia said, "A monster like you

Has no place on this earth.

Take to the skies, or you will all die,

Or prove to us your worth.

"You may take off on wings of fire

Up to the land of God,

Or you can be on this earth with me

As one of mankind flawed."

The Demon King, he saw her light

And saw that she was good

He shed his flesh and began afresh

And took to wings of gold

And others more, they followed him

As dragons on the other wind

And others more knelt down to the floor

To humanity in

And that's how the first wizards were born

And dragons left the land

But five others more still had a score

With Yeulia of the sands

Sing Yeulia, O Yeulia

The Daughter of Heaven and Night

What will you do? What path will you choose?

Please ne'er give up your fight

Yeulia fought them off alone

But they struck a wound

From her nave straight down to her grave

And dropped her to the ground

Yeulia did as best she could

To return to her people and plains

But her blood from lost onto the first frosts

O Yeulia was slain

Then God above, he saw his dove

Having fallen from blood and burns

Her kissed her brow and made a vow

She'd always would return

Midwinter's Night, she was reborn

That child with silver hair

Reborn anew to guide us to do

All things of just and fair

And every time that she might die

Anytime we might face strife

She brings her ken beyond mortal men

To guide her back to life

And that's the tale of Yeulia

The Seeress of the World

Brave and kind and sees fates entwined

Just as our God foretold

Sing Yeulia, O Yeulia

The Daughter of Heaven and Night

What will you do? What path will you choose?

Please lead us unto light
